How to Install Mendeley : Mendeley Desktop, Web Plugin, and MS Word Plugin

 As a researcher, one need to manage their references and citations in an effective way. They also need to write bibliography on their articles or papers. Mendeley is a tool to help that task. Mendeley is a reference manager and academic social network that can help researchers organize their research, collaborate with others online, and discover the latest research.

 In this blogpost, I will try to explain how to install Mendeley on Windows Operating System step-by-step. We will also install the Mendeley plugin for Firefox (available also for other major web browser), and plugin for Microsoft Word, so we can insert citations and generate bibliography easily. Let's begin.

 Installing Mendeley Desktop

1. Go to the download site,  here.

2. Click on "Download now for Windows" (if you are using other operating system, click the one appropriate for you), and download the file to your selected download folder.

 
 

3. While downloading, the following page will appear. If you don't have an Elsevier account, click on "Register now for free". The account is necessary for using Mendeley. Follow the account register procedure.


4. After registering your account and the file finished downloading, open the installer file. The following UI will appear. Choose one of the installation options and click "Install".

 

5. Wait until the installing process finished. After finished, check the option "Run Mendeley Reference Manager" and click "Finish".


 

6. The Mendeley Desktop Login UI will appear. Enter the Elsevier email and password that you registered before.

 

After that, the main UI of Mendeley Desktop will appear. Congratulations! You have successfully installed Mendeley Desktop. Next, we will Install the Plugin for web browser (for easy reference importing) and for Microsoft Office (for citation and bibliography generating).

 

 Installing Mendeley Web Browser Plugin

1. Open your favorite web browser and go to the plugin link : Firefox, Chrome. I use Firefox in this post.

2. Click on "Add Plugin" (may varies depends on what browser you use).

3. After the plugin is added, click on the Mendeley plugin logo on the upper right of your browser. The plugin will sign you in to your Elsevier account. After signed in you will see the plugin view.


Installing Mendeley Plugin for Microsoft Word

1. Open this link, and click "Get it now".


2. You will be prompted to sign in to Microsoft Appsource. If you don't have an account yet, click Sign up for a free account". I will use my Microsoft account for signing in.


3. After signing in, you will be prompted to enter some basic data for the plugin. Enter the appropriate data and click "continue".


4. Click "Get it now", and after waiting for some time, click "Open in Word".


5. Your Microsoft Word will open, with "New Office Add-In" on the right side. Click "Trust this add-in".


6. After that, go to the "References" tab in Word, on the most right side there will be a "Mendeley Cite" menu. Click that to continue.


7. Click "Sign in" when the Mendeley Cite plugin popped up.


8. And we're done! You will be able to add citation into your article and insert bibliography based on the citations.
